Culture Builds Community Presents Soul Rhythms: Traveling Land and Heart through Music and Dance

March 5, 2012 - April 22, 2012

Cityfolk is embarking on a new kind of journey in 2012,  traveling land and heart through music and dance in our Culture Builds Community project. Soul Rhythms will engage all five Neighborhood School Centers (NSC): Fairview, Ruskin, Edison, Cleveland and Kiser. Each school will host aspects of this remarkable collaboration, bringing teams of intergenerational, multicultural folks together to make performance art. Those five teams will then merge into one, creating a collaborative performance including all participating artists of all ages. Truly, this is the mission: for all of us to work together.

This project will be realized over the course of 7 weeks, starting March 5th, 2012. Visiting artists will be in schools weeks 1 and 7; local artists will run rehearsals, weeks 2 -6. The final week brings all schools together for whole group rehearsals, ending in a dynamic performance at the Dayton Masonic Center on April 22nd at 3:00 pm.

Dayton is fortunate to possess highly diverse neighborhoods where cultural histories are rich and varied. The NSC students are bringing a wealth of perspectives. Together with nationally acclaimed visiting artists, gifted local artists and site coordinators to manage school teams, nearly 125 students will embody the soul in Soul Rhythms this spring!

Here are  the visiting artists that will work with local artists in each school:

LaFrae Sci (Fairview School) with Renee McClendon, Sierra Leone and Stivers Jazz Band.

Step Afrika (Edison School) with Central State University Steppers

Hammerstep (Cleveland School) with Beth Wright and The Corndrinkers,

Hasan Isakkut (Ruskin School) with Twin Towers Turkish Dance Collaborative, and

Sones de Mexico (Kiser School) with Orgullo Mexicano

This concert is a culmination of the Cityfolk/Culture Builds Community Soul Rhythms Residency, providing transformative arts and cultural experiences in underserved Dayton communities.
