Fall Prep Part II

Hi, welcome to part 2 in our Fall Prep for Winter.

We focused on inside last week, lets look at outside for a minute.  Although Dayton may not have the worst weather in the US, we still have cold, biting winds and freezing temps.

If you have hoses, it is important to drain them and put them away for the winter.  Honestly, we have lost more hoses that way.  If they freeze, there is a very good chance(trust me) that they will split!  Come spring, you turn on your hose and get a cold shower!!  Not fun. Do wrap your outdoor faucets with pipe insulation.
Also, either hire someone, or very carefully get on a ladder and clean out your gutters, so the water will flow out and not stay and freeze.  Same thing-damaged gutters.
Horse Property Note:  You have to have outdoor water if you have horses or other large animals.  The electric water tanks are great.  Check out www.statelinetack.com for deals on those products.  They have some good products and they ship fast.  You  can also get something that wraps around your faucet in the barn and plugs into the wall to keep the pipe from freezing.  That way you still have running water even if the barn is not heated(I tried to get my husband to put heat and ac in the barn but was unsuccessful….sigh).

Don’t forget to get your chimney inspected for those cold snowy afternoons that make you want to curl up with a good book and a cup of coffee and watch the fire flicker and the snowflakes fall.
Now that you are done winterizing, go to http://www.metroparks.org/winter/ to find out what to do in Dayton with all that spare time that you spend doing yard work and home maintainence during the other seasons.
